With Christmas over for another year, it can often feel as if there’s nothing left to look forward to – besides the rest of the cold winter months that is! But don’t give up hope just yet, there are plenty of places out there in the world that are just perfect for banishing those winter blues. Here are five of our favourites.

Shopping along the legendary streets of New York City is a real bucket list treat at any time of the year, but in January you can even please your purses whilst doing it. With post-holiday season sales taking place all over the city, there’s no better time of year to set foot inside the iconic department stores of Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s to pick up a bargain or ten.

Unlike the UK where sales can even start as early as Christmas Eve, NYC’s don’t begin until January – so you’ve still got plenty of time to shop ‘til your drop!

If you’re craving a little winter sunshine, you can’t do any better than a paradise break to the beaches of Thailand. With miles and miles of bleached white sand and crystal blue waters, you’re sure to find the perfect place to nurse your January blues in style.

Pamper yourself at the luxury beachside resorts of Phuket, Pattaya or Koh Samui or, if undiscovered bliss is more your style, head straight to the hippie dream islands of Koh Chang and Koh Khut. For breath taking diving, Koh Tao is unbeatable, whilst Koh Phangan is the hedonistic home of the world-renowned Full Moon parties on the beach. Winter, who?

A spa break destination since Roman times, Budapest is known as the “City of Healing Waters” and has plenty to soothe those post-Christmas bulging bodies and weary heads. With hundreds of natural springs and wells all over the city said to produce healing waters filled with minerals, the city is home to plenty of beautifully decorated thermal baths for the public to enjoy.

Pay a visit to one of the city’s baths to quite literally soak up the goodness. The Kiraly baths date all the way back to the 16th century and the art-deco Gellert Baths will see you relaxing in the waters in style. You’ll start the year feeling like a brand new person.

Although São Paulo is the country’s biggest and richest city, the infamous Rio de Janeiro is its cosmopolitan heart and here there are plenty of ways to banish your post-Christmas blues.

Spend your days climbing Sugarloaf Mountain or sightseeing Christ the Redeemer, before enjoying a caipirinha cocktail as the sun goes down on Copacabana beach. You’ll soon forget all about the winter chills of home!

At 7.8km (almost 5 miles!) long, the skateway winds all the way through the heart of Ottawa, past Canada’s Parliament buildings as well as the majestic Chateau Laurier Hotel.
